Umbria is a lush and green landlocked region in the heart of Italy, bordered by Tuscany, Le Marche, and Lazio. It’s home to the country’s fourth-largest lake, Lake Trasimeno, cheery yellow sunflower fields, vineyards, olive groves, and Roman ruins. While its more famous neighbor, Tuscany, seems to get all the glory, Umbria is truly one of the best-kept secrets in Italy.
Visitors will find lots of rich history to explore, intriguing art, stunning natural scenery, and mouthwatering cuisine, yet the crowds are much thinner than you’ll find in the country’s most popular destinations. In some places, you might be able to enjoy the attractions practically all to yourself. Strolling the centuries-old streets of hill towns like Orvieto and Assisi, discover fabulous photo ops around nearly every corner. In Umbria’s spectacular and mountainous national park, Mount Sibillini, there are miles and miles of walking and biking trails along with abundant wildlife.

As a land of striking natural beauty and history, there’s lots to see and do in Umbria. You’ll want to choose a base, or two, before deciding which hotel to book. The best place to stay in the region really depends on your particular interests and travel style, but the capital city of Perugia is a great place to start. The vibrant city has sprawling urban and industrial areas but the historic center is a delight and you’ll be perfectly situated for exploring other places throughout Umbria.
Plus, it sits about midway between Florence and Rome, with a direct train connection making it easy to reach either city. There are many other destinations to consider, like the lovely hilltop Orvieto which boasts magnificent views of the surrounding countryside, or Castiglione del Lago, which sits right along the shores of Lake Trasimeno. Assisi is a must for pilgrims and those interested in religious sites.
There are practically an overwhelming number of things to do in Umbria, but for the first-time visitor, these are some absolute musts.
A 16th-century papal fortress in Perugia, Rocca Paolina was built at the bequest of Pope Paul III, not to protect the city but to display his strength and power in order to impose rule upon the local lords, particularly the Baglioni family. It was constructed using materials from the family’s houses and various medieval buildings that were torn down. Highly atmospheric, most of which remains can be found underground, including parts of the ancient village and palace basements.
Enchanting Orvieto Cathedral is located in Orvieto’s main square. A gorgeous example of Gothic architecture, it was built in the 14th century and boasts a vibrant façade adorned with stained glass, spires, and elaborate carvings, while its chapel contains magnificent Renaissance-era frescos painted by artist Luca Signorelli. It’s a must-visit, with the best way to experience it and soak up the authentic atmosphere of the town, said to be marveling at its beauty while sipping wine from a ceramic cup.
One of the prettiest towns in Umbria, Bevagna is located at its heart. The walled town has ancient Roman roots with medieval character, home to multiple impressive Roman ruins. That includes Roman baths, with the remains of a frigidarium (cold water baths) including an exquisite 2nd-century mosaic with a lobster and its outstretched claws with a swerving tail considered to be one of the most refined, intact vestiges of Rome. There are also two Roman temples, the remains of a Roman theater, and Romanesque churches.
There are many scenic trails throughout Umbria, including in its national park. One of the other highlights for hikers is the Nera Gorges trail. It follows old railway tracks for just over three miles, winding alongside the Nera River. In addition to the natural beauty that includes San Liberato Lake and a wealth of bird life, there is history to explore. That includes the remains of an ancient Roman harbor and shipyard, caves once inhabited by hermits, an abbey, and a 27 BC bridge.
The fourth-largest lake in Italy, Lake Trasimeno is a great place to spend a day or several, especially in the summer with all types of activities available in, on, and around the water. In addition to the usual watersports, visitors can take a boat to one of the three islands in the lake, like Polvese which is part of Trasimeno Regional Park and includes a monastery and 11 th -century church, or Maggiore, home to the Chapel of San Francesco which contains the saint’s bed.
There are four different wine routes to explore in Umbria which produces some outstanding wines that everyone from casual wine drinkers to experts will appreciate. In between touring and tasting, you can explore charming villages and gaze out at spectacular landscapes. One of the top wineries is Arnaldo Caprai, renowned for its Sagrantino red, with cellars open for tours. It also hosts a fabulous terrace where you can enjoy a tasting experience and a stunning panoramic view over the Sagrantino and Montefalco vineyards.
The best time to visit Umbria is generally April through early June or September and October, particularly for sightseeing and enjoying outdoor activities as it won’t be too cold or too hot. Temperatures typically range from the mid-60s to upper 70s Fahrenheit, meaning you’ll avoid summer’s extreme heat and the summer crowds. Late September and October can be especially ideal with the landscapes blanketed with brilliant autumn foliage.
Those who come in the off-season, from November through March, will enjoy an especially tranquil time with few visitors around as well as the chance to take advantage of budget-friendly prices with significant discounts on accommodation. Even in the winter, the weather is relatively mild, with daytime highs averaging 50 degrees, outside of the mountainous areas and ski resorts anyway. There it will be a bit busier with many coming to ski the slopes, taking advantage of all the snow and the beauty of a white wonderland.
