It offers everything from magnificent cliffside resorts with pools to chic boutique hotels in the town center housed in historic buildings, budget-friendly B&Bs, various short-term apartment rentals, and family-run guest houses. You’ll want to decide which area of town to stay in before searching for that perfect option. The historic center is the best choice for first-time visitors, sightseers, and those who want to be close to nightlife, but it can also be noisy. There are neighborhoods within walking distance that provide a quieter setting if that’s a concern. There is plenty of things to do in and around Sorrento, but for the first-time visitor, there are some absolute musts.
Located in the historic center, Piazza Tasso is the hub of life in Sorrento. It attracts both locals and visitors, with the cafes that line the square providing a perfect spot for people-watching while enjoying coffee or a limoncello. As the beating heart of town, there is a busy intersection of streets here with many restaurants, bars, and hotels, along with landmarks like the 1572 baroque church of Santuario del Carmine with its yellow façade in the eastern corner.
Just five minutes on foot from Piazza Tasso will bring you to this spectacular park known as Villa Comunale which includes impeccably manicured gardens and one of the best views in southern Italy, perched atop the cliffs. You’ll see the endless blue of the Gulf of Naples, nearby islands, and Mount Vesuvius in the distance. This is also a top spot for watching a romantic sunset while the vast lawns serve as a concert venue during the warmer months.
The busy main shopping street located just off Piazza Tasso, Corso Italia is a must-stroll – in fact, this is where you’ll want to come to enjoy the Italian tradition of passeggiata which means an evening stroll. There is a wealth of souvenir shops, boutiques, bars, restaurants, gelaterias, and other businesses to explore along the way, and they stay open late, with many not closing until 10 p.m. although most shutter between 1 and 4 p.m. for lunch.
Hop into the elevator or enjoy a 15-minute stroll from Villa Comunale to reach Marina Grande, one of Sorrento’s two harbors. This is one of the best for tourists, with countless photo-ops and a charming village atmosphere. There are colorful homes, boats, and restaurants serving the fresh catch of the day. Set right along the waterfront, it has a traditional feel, with family-run tavernas for a classic, authentic meal but it’s fun just to watch the local fishermen hauling in their catch.
Sorrento is famous for its lemons which are ideal for making limoncello, the town’s signature drink. Learn more about it by taking a tour and a tasting that includes all stages of the production process followed by samples of limoncello and other products. Or visit a local lemon farm to learn how to make your own and see the lemon groves. If you don’t have time, many restaurants provide a free thimble to finish off a meal and there are many shops selling it by the bottle.
Capri is considered a must day trip from Sorrento. You can hop on the ferry and be there in 20 minutes. You’ll see many superyachts in the harbor as it attracts all sorts of international jet setters and celebrities who enjoy walking the maze of narrow streets. It’s a top spot for shopping with upscale high-end boutiques that sell designer brands and shops that sell local and regional items like limoncello and handmade leather sandals. The Blue Grotto is its most popular natural attraction.
Sorrento is a popular tourist destination that can be visited year-round, with a reason to visit in every season, although most come between April and October when the weather is mostly pleasant and there is little rain to contend with. This period is generally considered to be the tourist season, with the peak arrivals during the summer, from mid-June through mid-September. While some businesses close during the winter, there will be plenty that stay open, including shops, restaurants, and hotels. You’re likely to find discounted rates and a more authentic local vibe too. The downside is that during this time it will be wet and chilly – and, if the rains are heavy, mudslides can occur, blocking roadways. If you want to avoid the busiest season and the crowds while enjoying a better chance for nice weather, consider visiting in one of the shoulder seasons, with spring particularly ideal.
